Our History
In the Fall of 2007, Congressman Ruben Hinojosa convened a group of community leaders for a meeting that was held during the Hispanic Engineering Science Technology Conference (HESTEC) week.
The Group Included the following:University of Texas Pan American, South Texas college, Texas State Technical College, University of Texas Brownsville, Avance-RGV, Texas Migrant Council, and representatives from the offices of U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar and U.S. Congressman Salomon Ortiz.
The initial meeting of the group allowed them to discuss the purpose of the South Texas Reading Initiative. It was decided that the new group would cover the same geographic area as the Region One Education Service Center located in Edinburg, Texas. The service area covers from Laredo to Brownsville along the Rio Grande Border.
Today, the South Texas Literacy Coalition is 35 organizations/members strong and continues to work diligently to serve as a voice for the literacy community, while helping make a difference in the lives of children and families by providing literacy resources.
